Prime Minister of Greece, Simitis, visiting the US

Prime Minister Simitis is expected to visit the US, including New York and Washington DC. He arrives in Washington on 1/10 and departs for NY Friday, Jan 11 after visiting US President Bush.

 

First Kafenio of 2002: Friday January 11th, 2002


Prometheas will start the New Year with a traditional KAFENIO scheduled for Friday, January 11, 2002 at 7:30 to 11:00 p.m., at the Founders Hall of St. George Church, Bethesda, MD. Come with your family and friends and enjoy a special evening of Greek music, a short video presentation on Greece, tavli, cards and other musical surprises. Also, there will be a display of Greek books and brochures of cultural interest (a new feature) that members may wish to browse (or bring their own books for display). Coffee, sweets, wine and cheese will be available. Don't miss it!!

Annual celebration of the Greek Letters Day, Friday January 25th, 2002

The Hellenic Society Prometheas invites you to its annual celebration of the Greek Letters Day.

Guest Speaker: Prof. ALEXANDROS ALEXAKIS

Topic: THE GLORY OF BYZANTIUM

A lecture with slide presentation of the long and glorious era of the Byzantine Empire. Byzantium as a link between antiquity and modern Greek times; its influence and contribution to the Hellenic Culture and the European civilization. The transition from paganism to Greek Orthodox Christianity. The contribution of the Three Hierarchs to the acceptance and integration of the highest ethical values of the ancient Hellenic world into Christian beliefs. The lecture is in Greek.

The Greek schools of the Washington Metropolitan Area will participate in the celebration with short readings from the Byzantine era.

A reception will follow. The Society will also cut its traditional vasilopitta.

 

Theatrical Play: "Ζωη σε λογου μας" on Friday, January 18th, 2002

The Theatrical Group of Heraklion, Crete is presenting the comedy of Manou Mania "Ζωη σε λογου σας". The presentation is supported by the Cretan Association of Greater Washington DC "Kazantzaki" and the Hellenic Graduate Student Association "Digenis". It will take place at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center Kay Theater of the University of Maryland at College Park at 8:00 pm on January 18th.
