The Hellenic Society PROMETHEAS and The Greek School of St. George invite you to the Celebration of Greek Letters
Dr. Alfonso Gomez-Lobo is Ryan Professor of Metaphysics and Moral Philosophy at Georgetown University. He received his education in ancient Greek philosophy, literature, and history in Chile and Germany. He also studied in Greece, with a Typaldos scholarship (1958-59), where, in addition to ancient literature and philosophy, he studied the Greek language (in which he is proficient) and got to love the Greek people and culture. Prof. Gomez-Lobo is uniquely qualified to talk to us about Greek letters and the far-reaching influence of Greek culture in present-day life from his personal as well as professional experiences. In his talk, he will first anecdotally narrate his intellectual Odyssey to Greek letters as well as his first-hand acquaintance with Greece and its culture during his studies and subsequent educational trips there. He will then discuss some of the more potent cultural, philosophical, and political ideas that were created in and disseminated from Greece such as "democratic institutions", "ethical values", and "principles of civil society", with emphasis on the writings and legacy of Thucydides and Plato. He will focus on the relevance of these unique and outstanding contributions of Hellenic civilization to contemporary life. A Question and Answer period will follow the lecture. Following the lecture, PROMETHEAS will celebrate the start of the New Year 2000 with the cutting of the traditional vasilopitta. A coin, carefully buried in the vasilopitta, will go to the lucky participant! _______________________________________________________________________________
